Enola Holmes Review (2020 film, Crime/adventure, 2hrs & 3 minutes)
Last Saturday night after I got in from working a long shift in my job at ASDA. I joined my parents in watching a new film that has just been uploaded to Netflix called ‘Enola Holmes’. The film is about the the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes as she set out to investigate the disappearing of her mother and why she left her and her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes.
The background of the film is centred around her mother’s sudden disappearance but as the film develops it becomes more of a self discovery film of young girl, ‘Enola Holmes’ finding her way in the world as she investigate further into her mother’s disappearance. As Enola investigates the audiences learn of the kind of relationship she had with her mother and her two brothers. Her mother teaches chess, science (bomb making) and making decides, that will help her in live and as a detective. Whereas her brother Mycroft just want Enola to be a lady, go to finishing school, get married and raise a family. Her other brother Sherlock, on the other hand, is more of a supporting brother and good mentor towards Enola and whom she also learns the craft of being a defective. I will try not to spoil the film for anyone who wishes to watch it on Netflix, but from start to finish I found it to be very entertaining and it that all the characters in the films all have an important part in the story and to Enola’s personal development. This helps the film develop over it’s duration and just when the audience things they understand the plot there is a sudden twist which takes the actors and audience of guard. I very good film for the whole family to enjoy over lock down. Full of mystery, action, drama and comedy.
The way the film is make the director would would use the same technique used when 20th Century Fox was making the Deadpool movies, when the characters would suddenly talk to the audience. This known as "breaking the fourth wall". The way the in which Enola does this throughout the movie helps the audience engage with her and makes the audience feel that that are with her in her investigations. As well as \"breaking the fourth wall\" the director has put just flash backs in areas of the film to show the relationship Enola has with her mum. This adds another layer to their mother and daughter relationship and Enols uses these flash bark to help her solve the investigation that she is currently on going, not knowing that both her mothers disappears is linked to the mystery.
The film has an all star cast that will make the interested in watching with their family and friends. Enola Holmes is played by Millie Bobby Brown (‘Once Upon A Time in Wonderland’. ‘Stanger Things’, etc) and gives an amazing performance of a young girl seeking out to find her mother and her place in the world. Along with her she has Henry Cavill (Played Supermen in ‘Justice league’, ’Man of Steel’ and a spy in ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E’) playing her brother Sherlock Holmes and who gives a good take on the famous defective that we have come to love and gives his personal take on Sherlock Holmes. Then we have Sam Claflin as the older brother Mycroft Holmes (from the ‘Hunger Games’, ‘Me Before You’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’, etc) and give a brilliant performance as Mycroft Holmes. The relationship between the two brothers in this movie towards their younger sister is like ‘Good Cop, Bad Cop’ routine. Then we have Louis Partridge playing Tewkesbury ( ‘Pan’, ‘Paddington 2’) and becomes friends with Enola, providing a good support act and good chemistry in front of the camera. With the brilliant Helena Bonhan Carter playing the mother and give a fabulous performance.
From https://www.popbuzz.com/ there is talk of a possible sequel for Enola Holmes. The film is based on the series of books by Nancy Springer novels and with five books to go on there is plenty of material for a possible film series. However it is unclear from Netflix with a sequel from go ahead, we will just have to wait and see.
