The Nan Movie
A few weeks ago, I was scrolling down the TV looking for a good light-hearted movie to watch and came across ‘The Nan Movie’. Written by Catherine Tate and Bred Goldstewin, and staring Catherine Tate, Matthew Horne and Katherine Parkinson. I remember watching Catherine Tate in ‘The Catherine Tate Show’ on BBC two from 2004-2009. The character Nan is one of the one character Catherine Tate portrays and probably the funnies and well-known character, from the series, that deserves her own movie.
The film starts off when Nan receives a letter from her sister, who is dying, and asking her to come and visit her in Ireland. Her grandson Jamie, played by Matthew Horne known from ‘Gavin and Stacy’, persuades her that this could be her last change and that she will only regret it, if she didn’t go. Nan reluctantly decides to go on this trip to Ireland and the two of head of to visit her sister. The movie is basically a road trip across the UK and Ireland, full of comedy and drama.
How the movie is filmed is very well. The audience has a mixture of comedy and drama. For people that are fans of Catherine Tate this movie demonstrates that she is professional actor, not that she is not already, and who can play any character regardless of what kind of film it is. Being either a comedy or drama. How the film achieves this is with flashbacks from when Nan was a young woman, and this is where the film become a drama and not just a comedy. In layman terms, the scene with old Nan is the comedy aspect and young Nan is the drama part of the film.
The film is edited very well to create a film that is enjoyable to watch. The flashbacks enhance the film. Without the flashbacks the film property would not have done well at the box office. The flashbacks break the film up with Nan and recapping what ready happened between her and her sister. Nan provides the comedy element to the film and acts as a rest bite. There is good drama scenes in Nan’s scenes and not joke after joke. How the writers achieve this is when there is a moment of reflection between herself and her grandson, Jamie, the next scene has a funny piece sound like to bring the scene back to reality and it gives a deeper understanding between the two main characters.
The Nan Movie is lovely piece of filming that takes audience on journey from London town to west coast of Ireland. Taking in the beautiful landscape across England and the beautiful west coast of Ireland. Through the comedy and the drama, the movie becomes adventure between the many things that Nan and Jamie get up on their latest adventure together.
The film can reflect on other people’s life of what ready matters and you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. Families will go difficult times and from watching this film I think that of some member may have fallen out it is important to forgive each other and not let silly things get in the way. It is important to make peace with each other and to enjoy life spending time with family and friends and the film is capturers this very well in how it is edited together to creative I piece of cinematography that is entertaining and enlightening to watch for whole family to enjoy.
